Life is unpredictable. But it is always reassuring to have guidance and inspiration from mentors. A great mentor is hard to find but impossible to forget in the journey of life. They help to regain hope and guide to recoup the confidence in subject matter. Mentors have expertise and experience in the relevant field and provide invaluable insights that make a significant difference in our approach and thought process. This article aims to highlight the importance of finding a mentor and how to become one.

The Importance of having mentor

Mentors aid the common goal of mentees which is growth and development. The systematic approach provided by the mentor will enable the mentee to stay focused on achieving the set target. Mentors offer specific instructions that help the mentees to learn quickly and avoid mistakes. They identify the hidden potential of the mentees and direct them to optimize their potential for success. Mentors provide constructive feedback and guidance to effectively achieve the set goal. The best reasons to have mentors are:

  • They share knowledge from experience
  • They instill hope and confidence
  • They help to balance both soft skills and hard skills in professional and personal life

The search for mentor

Mentors can be found via networking, personal connections, and professional platforms. The search for a mentor should often begin by identifying the field of interest. Networking can be made via attending professional events and also in applications such as LinkedIn and BlueTie. In professional platforms such as FutureLab and DDIchat, the search to find a verified and expert profiles of the mentors can be made by effective filters based on field and skills. After identifying the suitable mentor, you can schedule the meet or e-meet with mentors. The rest of the steps such as identifying your area of improvements, resources to build your knowledge and skills will be guided by your mentor.

Giving back by being a mentor

Mentors inspire us to be the best version of ourselves. Once the mentee becomes successful, they often tend to follow their mentor’s path and continue to empower their followers by sharing the knowledge. The responsibilities of mentorship may be unarticulated but understanding confidentiality and having an open mind are important in this process. Mentoring is a rewarding venture with great perks such as interpersonal development, recognition, and a sense of fulfillment. It also offers self-reflection, learning opportunities, and new perspectives and ideas in the subject matter.

Having been inspired and guided by great mentors, I would like to give back by being a mentor in my area of expertise (Data Science | ML | Analytics) and my area of interest (Philosophy | Modern Art). If you are a budding professional looking forward to transcending to the above-mentioned fields, you can message me via LinkedIn. If you need extensive guidance, you can schedule a DDIchat session with me.

Dedicating to all my mentors!
